Solve the Problem, Not the Service | A Customer-First Marketing Lesson

Great marketing doesn't start with what you sell.
It starts with the problem you solve.
A few years ago, I ran into the CEO of a mid-sized credit union at a local festival. We weren't talking business. We were just catching up.
At one point she mentioned they were considering ATM outsourcing, so I asked why.
I expected to hear about aging equipment, technology, or costs.
Instead, she talked about time.
Her team was spending far too much time dealing with ATM issues – following up on service calls, checking on repairs, answering member complaints, and coordinating with vendors.
For a mid-sized credit union, every employee wears multiple hats.
The time they were spending managing ATMs was time they weren't serving members.
After our conversation, I referred her to one of my ATM outsourcing clients.
About six months later, a bouquet of flowers showed up at my office.

No special occasion.
Just a handwritten note thanking me for the introduction.
Her staff had their time back.
Their members were happier.
And she wanted me to know it had made a difference.
Her thank-you note confirmed what I'd believed all along.
The true value of ATM outsourcing isn't measured by service tickets or uptime reports. It's measured by the time it gives back to a credit union's team – and the better experience they can provide their members because of it.
That lesson has shaped the way I approach marketing ever since. Before developing messaging, launching a product, or building a go-to-market strategy, I start by understanding the business problem customers are trying to solve.
People rarely buy your service because of its features.
They buy it because of the problem it solves.
That philosophy has shaped the way I approach every marketing engagement. Before developing messaging or launching a campaign, I work with clients to uncover the business problem they're really solving. Because that's what customers ultimately buy.
