Don't Market What You Do. Market the Frustration You Eliminate.

One of the biggest mistakes I see service companies make is marketing what they do instead of what they solve.

People don't buy ATM outsourcing.

They buy fewer headaches.

A friend who happens to be a credit union CEO recently shared why they switched providers. It had nothing to do with transaction speeds, up-time guarantees, or technical specifications.

He said, "Our ATM was always down. We were constantly calling. Every time we called, we talked to a different person. It got so bad that one of our older board members – who probably hadn't used an ATM in years – noticed and asked what was going on."

He said their ATM was constantly down. They were always calling for help. Every time they called, they had to explain the problem to someone new.

Their provider kept repairing the same machine.

The new provider replaced it.

More importantly, they assigned a dedicated point of contact. One person who knew their account and took ownership.

That's what they were really buying.

✅ Reliability.

✅ Responsiveness.

✅ Peace of mind.

That's the lesson for every company selling a service.

Don't market your features.

Market the frustration you eliminate.

Show prospects what life looks like after they choose you.

That philosophy has shaped the way I approach marketing, client relationships, and partner strategy throughout my career.

The best marketing doesn't just explain what a company sells.

It helps customers recognize the problem, understand the value, and feel confident choosing the right partner.

Because great service isn't just what you sell.

It's how you show up every day.
